by

There are a number of guilt-inflicting comments that I’ve heard, as someone who has suffered from a long-standing, well-publicized eating disorder:

  • “oh, you’re so thin. you need to eat something.”
  • “how do i get skinny, like you?”
  • “well, so and so, they’re obvioulsly bulimic, i mean, they’re your size.”
  • “obviously, you need to get over this because you’ll just teach your daughter it’s okay. you don’t want that for her, do you?”
  • “being anorexic is just a cry for help.”
  • “you’re not fat. there, do you feel better?”
  • eating disorders, though triggered by external stresses, the media or so-called “attention pleas” are rarely ever about the individual wanting more. they’re often about thinking you deserve less. less than others. the world. because you didn’t do something right, maybe, or failed in someway. the numbers on the scale - a symptom of a much bigger problem.

This is my first entry as the new author at eating disorder talk. What types of comments have you heard?

I heard the same ones back in the day. I never heard anything helpful, though. Except “I love you.”

    3. Kelly Says:

I heard the opposite. I had an eating disorder - bulimia - which increased as more and more folks would comment on my weight because I wasn’t skinny.

My favorite? “You’d be such a pretty girl if you’d lose some weight.”

    About Eating Disorder Talk

The goal of Eating Disorder Talk is to encourage family and friends of people living with disordered eating - as well as sufferers - to learn more about the conditions, where to get help, the risks associated and another vessel of communication. I come with 20 years of experience living with (and sometimes for) anorexia; my job is not to cure, it’s to allow others to speak. This means wanting to help those that want help and to provide a voice to those who don’t.
